The Story Behind Grace Mammen Design
Welcome to Grace Mammen Design, a New York-based interior design studio built on creativity, entrepreneurship, and timeless style. I’m so glad you are here. I’m Grace, a designer and creative entrepreneur who crafts spaces that blend classic design with modern comfort. What began in 2014 as a creative passion project decorating the first apartment my husband and I shared, is now a design studio dedicated to creating thoughtful, layered interiors serving clients in New York City and beyond.
This platform serves as an extension of Grace Mammen Design. Here I’ll share interior design inspiration, elements of my creative process, and reflections on entrepreneurship and life in New York City. While I’m new to this format, I look forward to writing here regularly. Through this creative destination, I’m excited to share thoughtful insights on design, lifestyle, books, and travel. Together, these ideas shape my work. Consider this an ongoing creative journal that holds ideas, inspiration, and the evolution of my work as a designer.
My Path to Discovering Interior Design
My path to becoming a designer is anything but linear. From a young age, I explored creative outlets such as visual art, photography, music, and writing. Because I loved the humanities, I gravitated toward storytelling and beauty. In college, I studied Classics and Latin and considered a career in medicine. However, I realized creative work energized me more. I felt fascinated by how environments shape daily life and emotion.
Design first emerged while decorating our apartment in 2014. At first, I treated it as a personal passion project. Yet I quickly recognized a deeper calling: a love for interior design and the power of thoughtful spaces. I fell in love with how layout, proportion, texture, and color could transform a space and the experience of living within it.
After time in the corporate world in New York City and graduate studies that deepened my interest in strategy and leadership, I became increasingly fascinated by the intersection of creativity and entrepreneurship. I realized interior design could be both artistic and operational — equal parts vision and execution. Then, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I paused and reassessed my priorities. That season brought clarity and prompted me to wholeheartedly embrace my artistic and design aspirations. I founded Grace Mammen Design on the belief that beautiful, functional spaces are foundational to how we gather, restore, and live well.
Design Philosophy & Process
Today, Grace Mammen Design creates timeless interiors that balance classic elegance with modern comfort. My approach focuses on proportion, layering, craftsmanship, and the thoughtful use of color and texture. Whenever possible, I incorporate vintage and antique pieces to add depth and authenticity. Above all, I believe interiors should feel elevated yet approachable.
My process is both strategic and personal. First, I learn how my clients live and the atmosphere they want their home to feel. Next, I develop a clear plan for everything from space planning to sourcing furnishings, textiles, lighting, and art. I approach each phase with clarity and intention. As a result, I create cohesive spaces that feel timeless and personal.
Living and designing in New York shapes my perspective daily. The city inspires thoughtful editing and purposeful decisions. No matter the project, I design interiors that feel grounded, balanced, and enduring.
